Though 'MS-DOS and compatible operating systems' are virtually obsolete, there are applications which are still are reliant on *DOS, the most recent example being the
International Space
Station.
These web pages are written
in the perspective of Standalone DOS which installs on FAT16 partitions and has
no FAT32 or LFN or Emulation Softwware compatibility.
Though I have tried to ensure that this site is compatible with a screen
resolution of 640x480, it views better at 800x600. Visually impaired
visitors can utilise VoiceMaker
Text-to-Speech software in conjunction with a Sound Blaster compatible sound
card or Jaws
voice synthesiser software.
Motherboard manufacturers are implementating BIOS support of bootable USB and
Firewire drives, therefore installing DOS on a Legacy free system is a real
possibility and recent technologies such as USB, IEE1394 FireWire, CDRW, SATA,
WiFi and ADSL Broadband can within certain limitations be intergrated into a DOS
system. AMD have already stated that all variants of the AMD 64 CPU
family have no issues when installing MSDOS 6.22 or compatible.
Norton Ghost in conjunction with USB/Firewire drives is outside the scope of
this site, though if you are unable to make Ghost function try Linux based Acronis True Image which is
highly recommended.
NT4, W2K, W2K3 and XP all have a New Technology Virtual Dos Machine which is
emulated MS-DOS. In the following article Windows
NT for DOS Jockeys is an explaination of why this is not MS-DOS. Windows
XP64 and the forthcoming Vista64 will have no 16bit NTVDM or 16bit Subsystem compatibility, M$ are finally killing of MS-DOS support.
