Installing ARACHNE 4 DOS
Obviously, the first thing
you need to INSTALL Arachne is a copy of the program! This is easy enough
to get from a download source.
|
|
You
can download the most recent version of 1.71 UEO1, FREE, from Glenn's Arachne Home Page site
at cisnet.com stateside of the pond. Simply select the "DOWNLOAD" box below, and then
follow the on-screen instructions. |
|
|
You can also download
an earlier copy from the original home pages of Arachne in the Chzeck Republic, at the time of writing this is version 1.70. (Glenn and some friends
have moved the programme on from 1.70, so again, use the
"DOWNLOAD" box below for the very latest version!) |

If all else
fails, send a clean, formatted 3.5 floppy, 1.44M direct to me by post,
together with a cheque, postal order or cash to the value of three pounds
Sterling to cover copying, packing and postage costs, and I will return a
copy to you, usually within 48 hours of receipt. This option is only
available by prior request, e-mail me for details. |
So now you've got a downloaded arachne file
, somewhere on your system. Probably the
best place to have this is in fact on a 3.5 floppy diskette, so you can use
it as a master copy for back-up and re-loading if ever needed. If the file is on your Hard Drive, find the file
and copy it out to a 3.5 diskette using whatever method you are happiest
with.
So far, all of this can be
done using any Windows system, or DOS system machine, so you can "borrow"
time on a friend's computer, or use an Internet Cafe unit.
|
The
next step is to use Winzip or any similar unzip program to then expand the file into a working copy of Arachne.
This should expand
the program into a working version. At this point you need to have available
the phone number of your ISP (Internet Service Provider) and importantly,
the Primary and Secondary DNS numbers to enter into ARACHNE as you go .You
should also know the speed of your modem.
If the program doesn't self start into setup, then start "arachne" at
the DOS prompt by typing just that, "arachne" and you will be asked setup
questions by the "Set-up Wizard" as you go. Fill in the answers and over 90% of you will be up and
running in minutes.
For specific DNS numbers
for some of the UK's "FREE" ISP's, then select ISP Help from the Navibar
below. |
| "Hold
On There Pardner! All this DOS stuff and DNS numbers and ISP's is beyond
me!" Don't despair, most Internet Service Providers have a step by step guide for newbies somewhere on their web pages,
or in their sign-up procedure. That's where you'll find the DNS numbers. Even although your ISP is called "www.bloggs.co.uk",
actually the computers they use will have a number (sort of like a worldwide phone number) for other computers to find them! That's the DNS number! Easy! |
